6 Ways to Conduct Great Interviews

There’s a lot of information out there about how candidates can ace interviews. But what about managers? After all, interviews are critically important when it comes to hiring the best person for a position, so you need to approach the job right. Vet each candidate ahead of time.

Spend time doing some digging online to ensure you uncover all you can about each candidate you’re interviewing. In addition, take a few minutes before the interview to read through their resume and cover letter once again.

Ease into the conversation.

There’s a lot of ground to cover in an interview. However, that doesn’t mean you should jump right into the tough questions from the get-go. Instead, take a more conversational approach and ease into it, asking a few ice breaker questions first.

Ask a blend of different kinds of questions.

From behavior-based to open-ended questions, there are many different types to ask. Put them all to use in an interview:

  • Close-ended questions: There are some specific facts and figures you need from each candidate related to areas like job titles and years of experience. For these, close-ended, specific questions work best, such as “How many times per week did you have to complete XYZ task?”
  • Open-ended questions: When you’re really trying to get a candidate to tell their story, open-ended questions are more effective. These include questions like “Where do you see yourself in your career in a year?”
  • Behavior-based questions: Likewise, if you want to gauge a particular skill set or strength, ask behavior-based questions, such as “Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult customer.”

Prepare ahead, but don’t follow a script.

It’s important to have questions and a structure for the interview planned out ahead of time. However, it’s also important to be flexible and allow room for spontaneity. Otherwise, you’ll be so focused on asking your next question that you won’t truly hear what the candidate is saying.

Make the most of your time.

Ask questions that are going to help you get beneath the candidate mask. If a candidate answered a question in their resume, don’t ask it again, unless there’s a discrepancy, or you want to dig deeper into a particular aspect of it.

Be consistent with your questions.

Make sure you’re asking all candidates similar questions. Once the interview process is over, it will be easier to compare them and make a decision about whom to extend an offer to.
