4 Signs Your Resume Needs an Update

Your resume is a critical part of the job search process. Without a solid one, you’re not going to get your foot in the door with potential employers. But writing one can be a challenge for many candidates. And it’s no wonder. Unless you’re an expert, you’re not well-trained in the process. Plus, it’s hard to write about and promote yourself, so you’re not alone if it’s a struggle for you.

Yet, you still need to submit a persuasive one each and every time you apply for a job. So if you’re not getting the results you want from yours, what could be the problem? Stewart Recruitment can help. As leading Hartford recruiters, we’ve put together a list of a few key areas to focus on and how to fix them:

1. It’s not customized.

It’s easiest to write one resume and submit it to all potential employers. However, that’s not the most effective strategy. Instead, you need to personalize your resume as much as possible to each position. Otherwise, hiring managers won’t know what distinguishes you and what you can do for them.

2. It doesn’t have any measurable results.

If your resume is just a list of job titles and duties, it’s not doing a good job of marketing your background. Instead, there should be measurable results – in the form of numbers, percentages, dollar amounts and time saved – sprinkled throughout it. This communicates to employers how you’ve succeeded in past positions, so they have more insight into the value you offer.

3. It’s over three pages.

If you have a lot of experience, then a two-page resume is reasonable. Anything longer than that, though, isn’t going to get a second glance from hiring managers. They only spend a few seconds scanning each one. So the more clear and focused yours is, the better chance you have of getting their attention.

4. It’s not following current best practices.

For instance, if your resume has a long objective statement at the top, but no keywords from the job posting throughout it, it’s going to appear dated. It’s therefore important to ensure you know and are following today’s resume best practices as you’re creating yours.
